This year I wished my parents a Happy New Year on Facetime and we toasted in the new year. Growing up, video telephone calls were things we only saw on futuristic shows like The Jetsons or Star Trek. Video technology on smart phones and computers has been around since 2003 with the introduction of Skype, and is common today. Technologies we once thought far-fetched, sci-fi gadgets are on the horizon for 2016. Drone delivery, hotel rooms in space, and self-driving cars are only some of the innovations we may see come to the marketplace in the new year. Perhaps next New Year’s Eve some will watch the ball drop in Times Square from their hotel rooms in space.
Bionic arms and legs that were once the sole property of Steve Austin in the old Million Dollar Man television episodes, are now being developed in Universities and Institutes in the United States, Italy, France, Switzerland, etc. Those who otherwise were unable to walk, work, or run, can now do so once fitted with bionics.
Robotics in agricultural equipment, now working alongside human counterparts, have algorithms that enable these machines ‘learn’ to identify ripe fruit, pick it and grade it. As these ‘workers’ become affordable we will be seeing more of them on the farms.
The i5K project to sequence the genomes of 5000 insects will be completed this year. The goal of the project is to develop pesticides and other treatments that target specific species that carry and spread disease. The species-specific targeting would not affect pollinating insects.
Android Blackphones that encrypt all personal information regarding texts and calls will be available in 2016 for under $700.
Newlight Inc has developed a way to create plastic by using Carbon Dioxide and air to make a polymer, called AirPlastic. Rather than CO2 byproducts that are supposed to add to climate changes, this plastic will actually be lessening the compound.
In addition to these amazing developments, sunscreen pills, virtual reality goggles, and plastic money are also going to make a debut. It seems that change is inevitable and innovation knows only the bounds of our imagination. Happy New Year!
